EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS

The final product / outcome must be a debate between different groups in fluent English, performing through the basic knowledge displayed and developed throughout the sessions

DURATION

3 hours

DESCRIPTION

Firstly, students will be presented with information and sample debates so they can inductively learn the linguistic and formal aspects related to it. Critical thinking is fostered by means of research and development of a speech cooperatively. Public speaking in a debate that is carried out in a respectful way is the final product

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In Andalucía (Spain), there is a yearly debate contest in both Spanish and English which is becoming popular among schools. In fact, through the innovation programme ComunicA that Junta de Andalucía implements, we receive courses and materials to introduce this active way of teaching in our sessions. At our school, IES Fernando III, we celebrate a debate contest every year with more than 100 participants

ATTENTION TO DIVERSITY

Measures to cater for diversity:

1) Glossary to support vocabulary

2) Scaffolding techniques, from Lower Order Thinking Skills to Higher Order Thinking Skills (Bloom, 1956)

3) Heterogeneous groups and different roles in every team. The introductory part can be well-prepared and learnt, whereas the 2nd rebuttal and the conclusion demand a higher level in English.

4) Language frames to improve fluency

5) Reduction or extension of time

6) Multiple Intelligences are considered in the design of the tasks and materials

7) Programmes for the Reinforcement of Learning for students with difficulties
